Design and calibration of an optically segmented single volume scatter camera for neutron imaging

Abstract The Optically Segmented Single Volume Scatter Camera (OS-SVSC) aims to image neutron sources for non-proliferation applications using the kinematic reconstruction of elastic double-scatter events. Our prototype system consists 64 EJ-204 organic plastic scintillator bars, each measuring 5mm × 200mm and individually wrapped in Teflon tape. array is optically coupled two silicon photomultiplier ArrayJ-60035 64P-PCB arrays, comprised individual 6x6mm J-Series sensors arranged an 8 array. We report on design details, including component selections, mechanical assembly, electronics system. described leveraged existing off-the-shelf solutions support rapid development a phase 1 prototype. Several valuable lessons were learned from testing, those related detector's structure electrical crosstalk that we conclude originates commercial photodetector arrays associated custom breakout cards. detail our calibration efforts, beginning with calibrations electronics, based IRS3D application-specific integrated circuits, their timing resolutions, ranging 3090ps. With applied, energy position performed set edge bars 22 Na 90 Sr, respectively, reporting average resolution 12.07±0.03mm depositions between 900keVee 1000keVee. further demonstrate method internal matrix cosmic-ray muons as alternative emission cannot easily access these measured 14.86+-0.29mm coincident time reported pairs up 400ps muon acquisitions. Energy values are consistent obtained particle sources.
